Essex Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers are helping monitor two sites for dormice as part of a project spanning 20 sites in Suffolk and Essex.

Dormouse nest tubes were set up in March, 50 at each site, and during the first checks in April two male dormice were found and checked by licenced dormouse handlers. Both males weighing 13g, they were completely torpid allowing them to be checked and placed safely back in their leafy nests without even waking up. Checks will continue monthly for the rest of the year and the results compiled for a regional study by the Essex and Suffolk Dormouse Group. The records will also be available to the EWT records database.
