Essex Wildlife Trust has a number of butterfly transects set up on its reserves, many of which have been running for some years. This has led to a good opportunity for a dissertation project to look in more detail at the fluctuations in butterfly populations in Essex in comparison to national trends.
We currently have transects set up at our headquarters at Abbotts Hall Farm, and other reserves in south and East Essex. In addition 10 new transects were set up in 2015 on Essex Wildlife Trust reserves, Local Wildlife Sites and Council owned land. This project offers the opportunity to analyse the data from these sites and also to take part in data collection during the butterfly survey season, either by helping with an existing transect or by setting up a new one.
